The Problem with Timber
We know what you’re thinking and yes, you’re right, timber is a cheaper short-term option when you have little building funds left, but, have you thought about the long-term consequences?
According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average length of time a homeowner is expected to remain in their home is between 11 to 13 years. So, do you know what the expected lifespan of treated hardwood sleepers is? Scarily, only 7 to 10 years! So let’s do the math together, if you intend to stay in your home for the average expected time, it looks like you’ll be replacing that pesky timber retaining wall!
This time around not only will you be paying for a new wall but you will have to pay to remove the old one too. If you are like most homeowners, that retaining wall will be built right on your boundary, with little space for machinery to remove it. Are you hearing the sound of your bank balance dwindling quickly, sadly I sure am!
Our intentions here were not to scare you but to show you that timber is a very short-term solution, and if you are looking for longevity, then concrete is the way to go!
